This deck was born from childhood memories. ‘Nerding out’ over ‘old-school’ 3D comics and cereal box promotions that used 3D art. The ones where you had to wear the red and blue paper glasses.

We decided to launch the idea on kickstarter to see what the playing card community thought. If that ‘old-school’ comic book style and 3D anaglyphic treatment pulled anyone else’s heartstring like it did ours. Luckily for us it did. Click here to see our campaign, additional photos and more.

The idea for this design came from how a house of cards is constructed. The stacking technique used, when displayed graphically, put a simple twist on the classic diamond pattern seen on the backs of playing cards used in casinos.

It also created a unique typeface and way of displaying the pips and court cards. No card front has the same pattern of stacked cards used to create this design either.

When designing this deck we wanted to be smart with how we used the elements that make a playing card work. To do this we used the rank to create the pip in the top left corner. You see both even though we only used one element.

We embraced the same visual trick, went big and bold, and used the pip to create the rank in the centre of the card. End result, a smart card design to be admired by everyone including the visually impaired.

We realised in some situations the centre of cards are useless. So for this design we ditched them. We also displayed the ranks as words and put them on an angle so you can get a really tight fan with your hand.

That's not all. Waste not, want not - we put the bits we chopped off the words on the card backs to create a graphic tiger stripe pattern… grrrrrrr!
